As we continue our series introducing you to the various committees and their members at WUMC, we turn our attention to the Finance Committee. Previously, we’ve highlighted the Church Council as a whole, our Church Council Chair, and two of our Lay Members to Annual Conference. Today, let’s delve into the vital work of our Finance Committee.
At the heart of the word “administrative” is “ministry,” and indeed, the work of the Finance Committee is a significant ministry. Their mission is to nurture the financial vitality of our congregation, ensuring that we have the resources needed to fulfill our vision for ministry. This important role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities that are essential for the church's mission and operations.
Tom is a kind, thoughtful, and hardworking person whether serving as an usher at 8:15am, doing the work of the Finance Committee, or when you bump into him in the hallway of the church. It is a pleasure having him as a part of WUMC. ~ Troy Sims, Director of Discipleship
In many churches, discussions about money can be uncomfortable, yet the Bible addresses financial matters frequently and directly. Money, especially when it becomes an idol, can distract us from our faith. The Finance Committee serves as a primary place of Christian discipleship, asking crucial questions: “Whom do you serve? Does Christ or money rule your life?” Their work helps us fully embrace Christ’s lordship over our finances and encourages a life of stewardship.
The Finance Committee’s Key Duties Include:
- Overseeing stewardship
- Compiling an annual budget
- Raising sufficient income to meet the budget
- Administering funds received by the church
- Counting and depositing the offering
- Disbursing funds
- Establishing internal control policies
- Reviewing and reporting on internal controls annually
- Providing for an annual audit of the church’s financial statements
- Reporting to the annual Charge Conference on the audit
- Recommending proper depositories for church funds
- Using contributions in accordance with donors’ intent
- Reporting annually to the Church Council on designated funds
Tom excels as Chair of Finance, bringing extensive knowledge and a collaborative approach to managing church finances. His professionalism and organization are invaluable assets to WUMC, and we are fortunate to have him in this pivotal leadership role. ~ Ken Hook, Chair of Stewardship
