Can a religious text written for monks 1,500 years ago have any wisdom to share with 21st century disciples of Jesus? You are invited to decide for yourself through a small group, facilitated by Rev. David Hindman (retired United Methodist pastor and former campus minister at W&M’s Wesley Foundation) exploring the Rule of Saint Benedict, the primary guide for monks and nuns in Western Christianity and a helpful resource for tens of thousands of Christians from many Christian faith traditions.

Using daily readings from Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister’s The Rule of Benedict: A Spirituality for the 21st Century, participants will read and discuss the Christian classic Rule and Sister Joan’s insightful commentary in which she claims that Benedict’s 6th century text directly touches contemporary issues facing the human community - care of the planet thoughtful and simple living, conversion of life, communication, reflection, contemplation, humility, and equality.

The schedule of daily readings from the book begins January 1 and will conclude May 1; participants in the small group will meet via Zoom every two weeks, 7:00-8:30pm, beginning Monday, January 12, with a final conversation on Monday, May 4.

Interested persons should get a copy Sister Joan’s book in time to begin the daily readings on January 1. We encourage you to buy your own copy and after registering, you’ll receive an email with links to places you can purchase it. Or, the church can purchase you a copy for $28.
