This past April, successive days of heavy rainfall caused the Ohio River to burst its banks, leaving large areas of Wheeling, West Virginia under water. Wheeling mayor Glenn Elliott told local news that the Ohio River had reached the highest level seen in the city in 20 years, with more than half of Wheeling Island facing severe flooding. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time WV has been struck by natural disaster in the past year.
Every year, WUMC embarks on Flood Bucket and Hygiene Kit assembly and each year you answer the call! Your financial contributions allow for the purchase of essential cleaning and hygiene supplies, and the hands-on efforts of our recent packing night provides relief to those impacted by disasters like these.
While organizations like the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR which provides Flood Buckets during natural disasters) are crucial to response efforts, nothing happens without your willingness to give your time and financial gifts.
Assembly night brought together generations, uniting families, friends, and new faces. Over a dozen Scouts, Scout leaders, and families from Troop 103 joined the experienced volunteers leading the efforts and keeping everyone moving smoothly. For the young Scouts, it was their first experience with WUMC's flood relief ministry. We were blessed to have them as an essential part of our mission, emphasizing community service and fostering new connections.
Amidst the activity, volunteers made new connections. WUMC member Michelle Roy discovered that her packing partner lived just a few blocks away. It was a night filled with joy as disciples of all ages worked together to give back to those in need, making new connections, catching up with friends, and serving alongside each other.
Each of the 100 Flood Buckets packed represents hope and support for families in disaster-stricken areas. We want you to know that YOU make a difference. It’s through your generous contributions and unwavering support that these lifelines are possible. THANK YOU for answering the call!
